Eisenbahnerquartier in Berne

The other Sunday I was strolling through a quarter in Berne I practically never go to.
I walked along paths I have never walked along before and I discovered a world which I had not seen before:

I came across the manor Weissensteingut... surprise... surprise...
never seen before, never heard of before...

The Manor was built in the 18th century

That's how it once looked:

Between 1919 and 1925 the Eisenbahnerquartier (railway employees'  quarter) came to life.
You guessed it:
The houses were merely built for the railway employees (SBB)
offering them favorable housing.
Up to this day the people who live here work for the SBB and the homes are very popular.

It's a bit like smurf village

The houses are rather small but they all have gardens, plenty of space for children to play in
and traffic is low. The houses are being modernized step by step.

When I was a child many quarters looked like this.
Not many have remained as untouched though.
In one of my next posts I'll show you some impressions
of a complete different quarter which is situated nearby.

  3. Dear Christa - I like your expression smurf village - it looks a lovely place to live. I should imagine that it has a close knit friendly community with lots of interaction going on between the residents. An especially safe place for children to grow and play.

  8. Guten Morgen, Liebe Christa! You see? I can speak German.

Like I was saying very, very Guten Morgen to you... though it's the afternoon, so save it for tomorrow!

Thank you for the images. Some of the houses could be in England! There are places round here, just like those!

I actually love the place where you live, it's a little square, isn't it? beautiful, from what I have seen! It's really nice, and looks very German, to me, which means nice, as I love Germany!

    Buona serata! CIAO, CIAO!

  9. Hello Christa,
What a wonderful new world you found and full of history it reminds me of Germany too. The railway employees must have thought it was wonderful and it still looks lovely today.I'm glad you had your camera with you. Have you always lived in Berne?

  11. Dear Christa
What do you reminded me .. SBB .. I worked for 19 years for the railway in Greece and we had a accounting together with your railway. It's the perfect example for all Europe. The settlement of the railway is like a fairy tale. I am pleased to discover this beautiful neighborhood and I thank you showed us.
    Have a nice day
